2013: Justin Chavez signed his first professional contract on March 25, 2013, becoming an official member of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers following a successful preseason campaign. Chavez was spotted by Strikers’ coaching staff at the 2013 NASL Combine.
Chavez made his professional debut as a substitute in the 3-1 defeat to the San Antonio Scorpions on May 18. He made his first start for the club in the next league match, a 1-0 away victory against FC Edmonton on May 26. Chavez was named to the NASL Team of the Week.
Professional: Was drafted by Chicago Fire S.C. in Round 4 of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft, but was not signed to professional terms by the team.
College: Chavez had a successful college career at the University of Tulsa. He appeared in 77 matches for the Golden Hurricane over four seasons. As a starting center back, Chavez scored five goals and tallied four assists.
During his collegiate career, Chavez received several recognitions. Chavez was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, and picked up All-C-USA first team accolades and NSCAA All-Region honors. He was Conference USA’s Defensive Player of the Year, earned C-USA all-conference first team accolades, and was selected to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region first team and the NSCAA All-Midwest Region first team.
High School: Chavez was a four-year letterwinner at Edmond Memorial High School. He scored an astonishing 44 goals and had 20 assists during high school. As a senior he lifted his team to the Class 6A State Championship.
