The Fort Lauderdale Strikers head to Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday, March 20, to take on the Sharks in their fifth match of the preseason at 7pm. The match will take place at the NSU Soccer Complex in Davie, and is free and open to the public.
Fort Lauderdale is coming off of a 5-0 victory against Barry University on Saturday, the team’s fourth shutout win in four preseason matches. Barry alum Mark Anderson registered two goals and an assist, as did Strikers forward Stefan Dimitrov who has impressed in preseason.
“You’re always pleased when you get a result like this,” said head coach Daryl Shore following the 5-0 victory. “This is our fourth game, and we still haven’t given up a goal.”
The Strikers opened preseason with a 1-0 win at FlU before a 3-0 victory against the Copa Latina All-Stars. Last week the team continued the run with a 1-0 win against FGCU before the 5-0 win at Barry.
Now the Strikers must turn their attention to the NSU Sharks. The team finished the 2012 season with a 6-9-1 record under long-time head coach Giuseppe "Joe" DePalo.
Strikers forward Aly Hassan—currently on loan to CD Aurora in Bolivia—spent four years at Nova, collecting several First Team honors including Daktronics All-South-South Region, NSCAA All-Region and All-Sunshine State Conference.
Stefan Dimitrov leads the Strikers with three goals in preseason action. He is trailed by Mark Anderson with two goals, and Manny Gonzalez and Gonzalo De Mujica with one goal each. Trialists David Santamaria, Jemal Johnson and Eduardo Jimenez have also each scored one goal apiece for the Strikers.
The Strikers next face Florida Atlantic University on Saturday, March 23, at 7pm. Tickets for the FAU vs Strikers game are $5 for adults. Children under 13, wearing their club jersey, are admitted free, as are FAU students and staff. At halftime, fans will have a chance to participate in the Flying High Soccer Ball Kick Contest. Contestants will compete to see who has the furthest kick. The Owls and Strikers will have a post-game autograph session at the field.
