FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (September 28, 2013) –The Fort Lauderdale Strikers let in two second half goals and lost to the Carolina Railhawks 2-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park. After a scoreless first half, the Railhawks’ Breiner Ortiz blasted a shot in the 64th minute to put them in the lead, and Brian Ackley capitalized on a PK in the 80th minute.
The Strikers came out strong and controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, but were not able to find a way to score. Good defensive plays by the Railhawks combined with missed chances by the Strikers resulted in the teams going into the locker-rooms tied at zero.
Carolina came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and immediately had their best chance of the half as Cesar Elizondo received the ball inside the box in the 47th but shot it wide of the net.
Strikers’ goalkeeper Richard Sanchez had several great saves, stopping close shots from both Nick Addlery in the first half and Elizondo in the second, keeping the Strikers in the game.
Toni Stahl, who was having a strong defensive game, had to come out in the 60th minute with an injury, and Carolina was able to capitalize on Stahl’s absence on defense. Just 4 minutes after Stahl came out Carolina scored with a rocket by Ortiz from outside the 18. The Strikers attempted to clear the ball inside the box, but Ortiz found it just outside the box and ripped it past Sanchez for the score.
In the 79th minute, Stefan Antonijevic took down Elizondo inside the box and the Railhawks were awarded the PK. Ackley, who had come in just five minutes earlier, took the shot and capitalized on the shot, giving Carolina the 2-0 lead.
