Fort Lauderdale, FL (October 22, 2013) –Fort Lauderdale Strikers defender Ivan Guerrero recorded four assists as he lent his presence to the attack to guide his team to a 6-2 home victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday. The Honduran’s performance earned him the North American Soccer League Player of the Week honors.
“I’m very happy, it’s nice for me to receive this award, but for me the most important thing is the team,” said Guerrero, who leads the Strikers in assists in his inaugural year with Fort Lauderdale. “It’s an award for the whole team, through the efforts we put together in the game.
“So I see it as a team award, not an individual award, because for me soccer is collective, it has nothing to do with individuals. So I dedicate this award to my teammates, and thank them because it’s through our collective efforts that our team works well.”

The crowd of 4,091 at Lockhart Stadium saw Guerrero assist on first half goals from midfielder Martin Nunez and forward Yaikel Perez to give the Strikers a 2-1 half time lead. The native of Comayagua, Honduras added two more in the second half on goal by Perez and forward Bradlee Baladez.
“This award is more than deserved,” said Strikers coach Günter Kronsteiner on Guerrero’s recognition. “To see what he’s doing and what he’s bringing to this whole league is amazing. He’s an outstanding player, and he has an outstanding character. He plays with his heart and he gives a lot of advice, but in such a nice way; this is really different and special. It’s extremely important to have a player such as Ivan on the team, especially when you have younger players.”
Guerrero began his professional career CD Motagua of the Honduran first division playing from 1996-2000, before transferring to England’s Coventry City (2000-2002). After returning to Motagua for two seasons, the Honduran defender spent 2004 with Uruguayan side Club Atlético Peñarol before moving to MLS teams Chicago Fire, San Jose Earthquakes, D.C. United and Colorado Rapids, before going back to play with Motagua until 2011.
Guerrero has played 84 times and scored four goals with the Honduran national team. He was also on his country’s Under-23 Olympic Team that competed in 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.
